Packing for the Big Move

Spring and summer are the biggest, and best, times to move. If you're planning a move here are 10 tips to help you plan ahead and pack wisely.

1) Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to pack. Start planning what you will pack and get supplies for packing at least six weeks before your move date. Planning in advance will save you time and your sanity later!

2) Get quotes and schedule your moving company early. During the nice weather moving companies get booked fast.

3)Buy supplies early and keep them handy. A list of supplies for the average home should include:

  • 20 Small Moving Box
  • 11 Medium Moving Box
  • 10 Large Moving Box
  • 4 X-Large Moving Box
  • 5 Heavy Duty Box
  • 6 Wardrobe Box
  • 1 Electronics Box
  • 2 Unprinted Newswrap
  • 1 Bubble Wrap - 150 ft. Roll
  • 1 Permanent Box Marker
  • 7 Box Sealing Tape - Clear

4) This is also a great time to purge items you no longe want or need. You can cut down on the amount of items and boxes you are moving by having a garage sale or making a charitable donation.

5) Use up your groceries and liquid household items. Perishable, frozen and liquid items are best if not moved so try to reduce what you normally purchase until after the move. If you must move liquid items, be sure they are sealed securely, the lid is taped down and, if possible put in a plastic bag to further prevent spills.

6) Tackle one room at a time. Start with the least used rooms first. Obviously you don't want to pack up the kitchen first. Try to pack with the "Load it last, unload it first" motto. This way the items you use the most will be the last items on the truck and the first ones off at your new home. Clearly mark boxes to be unloaded first.

7) Keep packed boxes under 50lbs and put the heaviest items on the bottom. Make sure all boxes close flat - it's easier to stack and saves room in the vehicle you will be using to move.

8) If it moves - tape it down!

9) Save more time by leaving clothes the drawers. Professional movers know how to handle furniture so the contents don't come sliding out.

10) Keep everything you'll need to set up in your new place, like screwdrivers, in a separate box, clearly marked.

Remember - no matter how stressful moving can be, it'll be over before you know it and you'll soon be relaxing in your new home.
